DEAN & DELUCA's Star Anise imparts a licorice flavor, similar to anise seed, but more intense and spicy. The hard brown pod has eight star-like points, each containing a shiny brown seed. Use the whole star or break into individual points when less is required. Marries beautifully with pork in stews or when ground into rubs. Break off a point or two for a mystery flavor in poached pears, bean dishes, or tomato sauces ... or grind into spice mixes for carrot cake or spice cookies. Star anise is the signature taste in Chinese soy sauce chicken and many other Chinese braises.

Just what I needed, real star anise. It's exactly what you would expect to receive, whole star anise. I bought it specifically for grinding to make my Italian cookie recipe but you could also use it whole in savory dishes. I expect the star anise to last quite a long time since they are whole and not ground. Thank you Dean & DeLuca.
